MAYFADOUN, Lebanon — Maryam Jamal Salameh was 18 years old. On 5 September 2026, her death was announced after she was critically wounded in an Israeli airstrike on her hometown of Mayfadoun in southern Lebanon, adding another young Lebanese name to a growing toll from Israel’s continuing attacks on the country.
The strike on Mayfadoun was part of a wave of Israeli attacks across southern Lebanon and the western Bekaa on Friday evening. Preliminary figures from Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health reported at least three people killed and 23 wounded across the attacks. Four people were wounded in Mayfadoun, including two women, while rescue operations continued at the site.
Salameh was subsequently reported dead from her injuries.
Her death comes only hours after a night in which Israeli aircraft struck multiple areas across Nabatieh and Tyre districts and the western Bekaa. The deadliest initially reported strike hit Ramadiyeh in the Tyre district, where one person was killed and 15 others wounded, including six paramedics, three women and two girls. Two people were also killed in Kfar Reman earlier on Friday when an Israeli strike targeted a motorcycle.
Israel said Friday night’s strikes were launched after its forces intercepted a drone it said Hezbollah had sent towards Israeli troops in the Israeli-controlled “security zone” in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah had not publicly commented on that allegation at the time of the initial reports.
But Maryam’s death does not stand in isolation.
Just over a week earlier, on August 27, another Israeli strike killed a young Lebanese woman in Arab Salim, also in the Nabatieh district. Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that she had been married for only 48 hours when the strike destroyed her home and killed her. Six others were wounded, including a child, another woman and two elderly people.
Two young Lebanese women, killed little more than a week apart. One had only just begun married life. The other was only 18.
The latest attacks also come against the backdrop of an increasingly fragile ceasefire framework. The June agreements were intended to halt hostilities, yet Israeli military operations, airstrikes, demolitions and incursions have continued across southern Lebanon. In a CNN report broadcast on 28 August, a Lebanese military official said the Lebanese Armed Forces had documented more than 5,000 Israeli attacks on Lebanon since the June framework agreement was signed.
UNIFIL had already warned on August 27 of renewed escalation, reporting continued Israeli military activity, fighter-jet overflights, airstrikes and the presence of Israeli soldiers across parts of southern Lebanon. The peacekeeping mission urged all parties to refrain from violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and warned that renewed military activity threatened the fragile stability in the south.
The scale of the violence has already been devastating. According to figures cited from Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health, Israeli attacks killed 4,354 people and wounded 12,325 between March 2 and September 2 alone.
For Mayfadoun, however, those figures now have another face.
Her name was Maryam Jamal Salameh. She was 18 years old. Her life should have been just beginning.
